This special edition reflects our enduring commitment to harmony, precision, and artistry—qualities that the golden ratio has long symbolised in classical music and violin making. Just as master luthiers and composers have embraced this divine proportion to create masterpieces, we too have woven this mathematical elegance into our bespoke range. Our "Golden Ratio" rosin features a unique 61.8% Supple recipe, further enhanced to capture the perfect balance of grip, texture, richness, and tonal clarity. This recipe intensifies rich, deep, bold, and warm sound colours, while maintaining strong focus and soloistic qualities.
We have chosen an elegant and colourful 'Cherry' timber for the casing, with a rich burgundy Australian leather wrap, embossed in gold with the Golden Ratio symbol. These luxury materials are sourced from Australian suppliers and hand made in our workshop.
For years, we have explored the bespoke range spectrum from 100% Supple through to 100% Crisp in search of a truly balanced recipe. The Golden Ratio asks a simple question: could this be the perfect rosin? More than a formulation, it is a tribute to timeless proportion and the pursuit of musical perfection.

The Golden Ratio (1 : 1.618) is a proportion that recurs throughout nature, art, architecture, and design, long associated with a quiet sense of balance and beauty. When a whole relates to its larger part in the same way the larger part relates to the smaller, this harmonious relationship emerges—one that the human eye and ear seem to recognise instinctively. Across centuries, artists and makers have drawn upon this proportion, consciously or intuitively, to shape works that feel naturally complete and aesthetically satisfying.
In classical music, the golden ratio often reveals itself in the architecture of a composition. Climactic moments, transitions, and thematic developments frequently occur at points that closely correspond to this proportion of the work’s total duration. In violin making, this same proportion can be discerned in the instrument’s form and internal geometry. Playing on Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin is like adding another dimension and colour to the sound. I have never found a rosin that could do this before now. Depending on the sound you are searching for, each rosin provides a different nuance and colour to your sound. My favourite is the supple because it adds thickness, projection and a warm colour. For several years I have been playing with a personally customised rosin recipe from Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin on my bows. This rosin absolutely overwhelmed me: the responsiveness of the contact point, which goes hand in hand with an enormous intensity and sound density, the carrying capacity of the sound and above all the design options are really on a unique level. The fact that problematic contact point zones are easier to control makes it easier for me to implement many colors and ideas on my instrument. A nice bonus is that the rosin hardly produces any dust and it really lasts a long time. I have recommended Leatherwood to many friends and colleagues who are now enthusiastically using Leatherwood as it minimizes many problems and creates new opportunities for them too. I urge everyone to try the different Leatherwood recipes, because with them you can find a partner for your musical life. I found mine in the 65% Crisp / 35% Supple.
Before thinking of buying a new bow, try Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin. The impact it has on the sound is just phenomenal!
Expensive but amazingly if not surprisingly good. Requires very little, improves sound consistency.
United StatesOver the years, I've managed to acquire all the violin Bespoke rosins, including Supple & Crisp. So having recently purchased a nice bow, I was able to dial in the particular Leatherwood rosin that was best for me. But, there's another avenue Leatherwood might explore. I find that, a little extra "dust" on the bow changes the tone of my violin in a way that I rather like. So, I give my 50%/50% Bespoke rosin a swipe or two with 220 sandpaper before rosining my bow. It gives my violin a little more of a musty, maybe sweeter, sound. Especially the E string.
